Magnifico Assisi

Okay, so I'll sum the breakfast up in Assisi in 3 words:
• Pastries
• Tarts
• Nutella
Oh my god, I went psycho.
The breakfast was to me, 'c'etait absolument incroyable!', meaning it was absolutely incredible.
(There you go, Jessie showing of her French).
Anyway, I was hungry and had a croissant with nutella (I don't know whether I'm ashamed or not), a slice of tart, a yoghurt and one coffee (the woman serving us asked if I wanted another, but then thought I was too young for coffee. I thought - "I work in a cafe, which serves brilliant coffee, and I have a coffee everyday...so why not?).
After feeling incredibly full of carbohydrates and sugar, we left for Medieval Assisi.
It was extraordinary. So extraordinary that Mum started crying. Jessie.
Yes I did. I've always been fascinated by all things medieval so Assisi was always going to be a highlight. Seeing it today was overwhelming as it surpassed all expectations. James and I kept saying it's like a movie set but REAL. The narrow undulating streetscapes, wooden doorways, iron work, dry stone walls, archways, shuttered windows, bells ringing etc etc were perfectly preserved. We wandered around for 6 hours drinking in it's loveliness. My imagination was in overdrive thinking about the history and people who have walked the streets back as far as 11th century. The basilica of St Francis was beautiful with magnificent blue ceilings.
We stopped for lunch at a restaurant and ate local Umbrian dishes such as wild boar, Umbrian sausages, antipasto of melted cheese with radicchio and walnuts washed down with a local red vino. Jessie and Freya then ate chocolate torte and tiramisu to die for.

Our day ended with a horror car trip to Florence. I just can't get used to the speed and craziness of the Italian roadways. Poor James is at wits end with me. Avoiding the autostrada to keep me happy didn't really work as the Italians still drove at unbelievable speeds. This trip is turning into a driving nightmare for me and thus James as I dread getting into the car. I would rather bungie jump off the Empire State building because I'm sure it's 100x safer. Our 4 hr road trip to Venice on Sunday looms large in my mind. For now I will think about our day exploring Florence planned for tomorrow.
