Another day, another chateaux.
This time we visited Villandry, one of the last great chateaux built during the Renaissance. It dates back to 1536 and was saved from ruin by a Spaniard Joachim Carvallo and his American wife in 1906. Using a literary source written by a 16th century French architect, he was able to restore the property and Renaissance gardens.
As expected the interior was grand, lovely furniture, views of the gardens, fascinating kitchen, sumptuous bedrooms. But the real attraction were the famous formal gardens. We wandered through three of the seven gardens including the Water garden, Sun garden and Ornamental garden. Once again we left the naughty teenagers at home. They spent the day relaxing at the mill eating all the yoghurt and chips!
Next stop is Paris.
